My Oasis student from Lawson elementary school |
Since my retirement in 1996, Lois and I have been mentoring students at Lawson Elementary. We joined the "Oasis"
program in the Hazelwood school district. Our goal is help build confidence in their abilities by reading a book and
writing a journal each week. We also have various crafts that we work on and they are able to take back to class
and show, and take home.
Melissa (Missy) is a joy to be with and we both look forward to seeing each other on Tuesdays.

We also help out on Wednesdays with the kindergarten class. Recently Lois and I went to the State Conservation
site "Powder Valley" to pick up a discovery trunk. We found out from Oasis that they loan out for one week, various
discovery trunks filled with interesting objects of nature. We borrowed the Mammal trunk, which contained about 10 pelts
of animals of Missouri. They also had about the same amount of animal skulls to exhibit. The kids, (and teachers)
were very excited and interested to see them. Our kindergarten class became very interested to know how the animals
died, and how did they get the skins off them. So many teachers asked us if we could show them to their class also,
so we wound up going to seven different classes. When I showed them the skulls and asked them if anyone knew what
they were, the most often reply was dinosaurs, or alligators, I guess because of all the sharp teeth of the coyote and bobcat.
It was a lot of fun, and I hope to go back later for another different type of trunk
